  • + 1. Find Facility Box

The features in this box will assist you in your search. They will allow you to enter a search location; choose between substance abuse treatment facilities, mental health treatment facilities, or both substance abuse and mental health facilities; search for Health Care Centers; search for facilities operated by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs; search for facilities with specific services; limit your search by state, county, or distance; and/or use the Options link to use more advanced functions.

    • + Searching by Location
      1. Enter a location in the search bar. Enter as much information as possible about the location you want to use as the center of your search (street, city, state, ZIP code, etc.).
        1. For addresses, enter the physical street address, not a Post Office Box number or Rural Route number.
        2. Do not enter apartment or unit numbers as a part of the address; only the street address is needed.
        3. As you type in the search box, the tool will give you a list of location suggestions based on what you have typed. When you see a correct match, you can click on it to complete the entry.
      2. When you are ready, hit Enter. A list of facilities and a map with dots showing the location of facilities will appear.
    • + Refining Search by State, County, or Distance

You can limit your search by location further by using the State, County, or Distance check boxes in the Find Facility box.

      State

Checking the box next to State will limit your results to the state you search in. A red line will appear around the state’s border.

      County

Checking the box next to County will limit your results to the county you search in. A red line will appear around the county’s border.

      Distance

Checking the box next to Distance will limit your results to a certain amount of miles in all directions from your starting location. You can choose how far you would like the search to go (the options are 5, 10, 15, 25, 50, and 100 miles). A red line will appear around this search area.

    • + Limiting Your Search by Facility Type or Services
      • Limiting by Facility Type

Depending on your needs, the Locator allows you to search for substance abuse treatment facilities only, mental health treatment facilities only, or both substance abuse and mental health treatment facilities. To do this, select the check box next to either Substance Abuse (SA), Mental Health (MH), or SA & MH. SA & MH is the combination of both substance abuse and mental health treatment facilities; this includes all treatment facilities known to the Locator. It is NOT limited to facilities that offer both mental health and substance abuse treatment at their location.

      • NOTE: The default search for the Locator is SA & MH.

      • Limiting by Services

You may want to search for facilities that offer specific services, like outpatient care or payment assistance. To do this:

        1. Choose either the Substance Abuse (SA), Mental Health (MH), or SA & MH options. (For an explanation of what those are, see Limiting by Facility Type above.)
        2. A menu will appear that lists service categories. Select the services that best fit your needs.
        3. To delete services that you have selected, you can either:
          1. Click the “x” to the left of the service in the “Services Selected” menu.
          2. Uncheck the box to the left of the service in the menu you selected from.
        4. The map and list of facilities will automatically filter as you add/delete services.
      • Health Care Centers

The Locator also allows you to include Health Care Centers in your search by checking the Health Care Centers checkbox in the Find Facility box. These are Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) health centers; the centers care for you, even if you have no health insurance. You pay what you can afford, based on your income. Health Care Centers provide:

        • Checkups when you are well;
        • Treatment when you are sick;
        • Complete care when you are pregnant;
        • Immunizations and checkups for your children;
        • Dental care and prescription drugs for your family;
        • Mental health and substance abuse care if you need it.
      • Veterans Affairs

You can also limit your search to facilities that are operated by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs by checking the box next to “Veterans Affairs.”

    • + Options

Clicking on Options (to the right of the Distance checkbox) will show a menu of five different options.

      • Show Facilities as Cluster

This will sort facilities that are in the same area into groups. Yellow circles represent each group of facilities. The number of facilities in the group is in the center of the circle. Clicking on the circle will force the map to zoom into the area and smaller groups of facilities will form. You can do this until the area viewed is too small to group facilities, and each facility will be represented by a red push pin. Clicking on this push pin will give you information about the facility.

      • Show All Facilities at Page Start

This is useful before you perform a search. This option allows you to see all substance abuse and mental health facilities known to the Locator in the United States and U.S. Territories, both on the map and as a list. Note that this does not include Health Care Centers.

      • Show Facility Side Panel at Page Start

This option shows the list of facilities to the right of the screen before a search is made. The list will remain empty until you perform a search.

      • List Only Facilities in Map View

This option will limit the facilities listed to the facilities that can be seen on the map. Any facilities that are outside of the map view will not be included in the list.

  • + 2. Map

Once you search for a location, colored dots that represent facilities appear. You can click on the individual dots to get more information about the facility.

  • + 3. Legend – Facility Type

The Legend explains which colored dot represents each type of facility on the map.

  • + 4. Facility List

The facilities that appear on the map based on your search will be listed here along with their address, phone number, and distance from your search location. You can click on a facility in the list to highlight the facility on the map. At the bottom of each facility, links for Directions and More Information appear. Directions will give you driving directions from your search location to the address of the facility. More Information will show the specific services offered by the facility.

    • + Driving Direction to Facilities

You can generate driving directions to any of the treatment centers listed in your search results.

Once you choose a facility in the Facility List, click the Directions link below the facility’s phone number or website. The site will bring up directions from the address you searched to the address of the facility you chose. The directions include an overview map that highlights the route with a heavy blue line. You can print the text of the directions by selecting the Print button in the right corner.

    • + More Information about Facilities

You can find more information about a facility by clicking on the More Information link to the right of the Directions link. You will be able to view all the services offered by the facility.

NOTE: Health Care Centers will not have a More Information link.

  • + 5. Facility List Tool Bar

Using this tool bar, you can download your search results in a Microsoft Excel® spreadsheet, share your search results via email, print your search results, and/or filter/sort your results.

    • + Filtering/Sorting Results

You can sort or filter your results using the Filter/Sort button on the Facility List Tool Bar.

      • To Sort your results:
        1. Click on the “Filter/Sort” button on the Facility List Tool Bar.
        2. Select the drop down menu to the right of “Sort by:”
        3. Choose an option from the list based on your needs.
          1. For example, choosing the “Facility Name: A to Z” will put the facilities in alphabetical order. Click the “Apply” button and your search results will be sorted.
      • To Filter your results:
        1. Click on the “Filter/Sort” button on the Facility List Tool Bar.
        2. There are three options to filter by: Facility name, Facility address, and Phone number.
          1. Facility name -To search for facilities by name, type partial or complete name in the search box and click “Apply.” The Facility List will filter and include only the facilities having names that match the given text. Search is case-insensitive, so user may choose to type letters in upper case, lower case, or a mix of both.
          2. Facility address -To search for facilities by address, type partial or complete street portion of full address in the search box and click “Apply.” The Facility List will filter and include only the facilities having addresses in which the street portion matches the given text. Search is case-insensitive, so user may choose to type letters in upper case, lower case, or a mix of both.

Be aware that filtering by address only considers street portion of any address. City, state, and zip code are ignored. For example, if complete address is “123 Main Street Omaha, NE 68132”, then only the street portion of “123 Main Street” is considered. Therefore, DO NOT type city, state, and zip code information in the search box.

Be aware that filtering by address using a 2-part value requires specific formatting in order to work. For example, a 2-part value might be something like “456 Washington Street, Suite 100”. The expected format of a 2-part value is shown by this example. The 2 parts are expected to be separated with a comma followed by a space.

          3. Facility phone number -To search for facilities by phone number, type partial or complete phone number in the search box and click “Apply.” The Facility List will filter and include only the facilities having phone numbers that match the given text. To type a full 10-digit phone number, please use the format ###-###-####. An example of this is the following: 123-456-7890.

Note: You do not have to enter an entire name, an entire address, or an entire phone number for the filter function to work; you can type in any part of the name, address, or phone number (for example, the first word in the name of the facility, the street name, the area code, etc.) and the list will filter accordingly.

      2. A form will open that allows you to enter your name and email address, the receiver’s name and email address, and any comments you want to add.
        1. You can add receivers by clicking the “Add Receiver” link on the right side of the form.
      3. Fill out the CAPTCHA.
      4. When you are ready, click the Send button to send the email or the Cancel button to cancel and not send the email.

Note: The sender and receiver can have the same name and email address if you wish to send the email to yourself.

    • + Printing Results

There are three options for printing:

      1. Include Map – Checking this box will print the map as well as the list of facilities. If you leave this option unchecked, only the list of facilities will be printed.
      2. Include Services Detail – Checking this box will print the detailed services offered by each facility.
      3. Print Only Selected Facilities – This will allow you to print only the facilities you select.

Note: The Print function will print no more than 300 facilities.

    • + Downloading Results

You can download your results in a Microsoft Excel® spreadsheet. To do this, click the Download button on the Facility List Tool Bar. The spreadsheet will download and you can save it to your computer or print it out.

More ways to learn about Downloading Results:
  • + 6. Pagination Tool Bar

The facility list defaults to 100 facilities per page. You can use this tool bar to change the number of facilities per page and/or navigate through the pages of facilities.

Initial Search from the Home Page

  2. When you are ready, click the Go button.
  3. The site will take you to the Locator Map page, where a list of facilities and a map with dots showing the location of facilities will appear.

Hints and Tips

  • If no results are returned, zoom out on the map to show a larger area. Or, check the Distance box and enter a larger number.
  • If you search only with a ZIP code, county, or state, the tool will search outward from the geographic center of the area. Thus, you may get results for other areas as well. You can limit the search area by searching for a more specific location or using the check boxes in the “Find Facility” search form to limit your search by distance, county, or state.
  • You can change the number of results displayed on a page by selecting a new number in the “Show [number] per page” box at the bottom of the facility list.
  • If two or more dots overlap on the map, you can zoom in to look at a smaller area and separate the dots.
